Scientific employment in computer science jobs is a fast-growing field. According to Professor Bruce Porter, of the University of Austin at Texas, the government has been successful in communicating to parents and students that computer science is in fact a growth field. These jobs also are high-paying, which is a blessing in today’s economy. The word is spreading because many of the best U.S. computer science programs are experiencing both rising application and enrollment in their programs.

Even in this bad economy, the field of computer science seems to provide something of a surety where many jobs cannot. Scientific employment in this field is seeing solid job prospects. Starting salaries for graduates with a degree in computer science are between $72,000 and as high as $105,000.

A wide array of companies in the private sector is interested in workers who have a computer science degree. A few examples of these companies are those in the financial sector (particularly credit card companies and also insurance companies), the networking sector, the software development sector and the defense sector.

This growth in computer science jobs and scientific employment in this particular industry also has to do with more and more companies needing computer science expertise. According to Cynthia Coleman from the University of Illinois’ Computer Science Department, corporations in industries that normally do not look for computer science graduates are today interested in hiring workers with a degree in this field. She further goes on to assert that each and every industry actually has computer science requirements.

The dot-com boom and ensuing implosion of the late 1990s and early 2000s will not be a factor in the rise of computer science positions. As a result, prospects going forward are that scientific employment in the computer science industry will continue to steadily rise.

For people working in the computer science field, the prospects are quite bright. Workers with degrees in this field can expect not only higher salaries than average, but also a demand from an increasing number of companies. While other industries are faring poorly in this recession, computer science is an exception.
